Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva

Butterflies in the Stomach

Over the past decade Elpida has developed a reputation for producing ambitious and complex works in sculpture and installation. Central to her practice has been a desire to respond to the particularities of a given location, be it in terms of industry, community and/or (natural) environment. Elpida's compulsion for responding to location has enabled her to produce a varied body of diverse work incorporating photography, video installations, sculpture and architectural interventions, which require a significant level of industry and resourcefulness.

Elpida aims to make the hidden visible, encouraging a sensitive appreciation of a particular place, but acknowledging both skill and craft which is less appreciated in the fast, mass produced, consumer focused society of the 21st Century.

She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 and the Royal College of Art in 1998 and since then has been exhibiting internationally in places such as the 51st Venice Biennale, Italy and L'H du Siege, in France. She has taken part in many European residency programmes including ArtSway and Berwick Gymnasium, in the UK; IMMA, Dublin and Sirius Arts Centre, Cork in Ireland and has also worked on a number of commissions including ones in Bristol, Kielder Forest and Brighton.

She has also been nominated to develop a proposal for submission to the Macedonia Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2009 with the National Gallery of Macedonia.
