Kathleen Herbert was Artist in Residence at Gloucester Cathedral 2006-2007. Born in Watford in 1973, Kathleen lives and works in Bristol and London and has just completed an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. Her work has encompassed sculpture, video and installation, investigating history and social politics through the details of individual experience and the everyday. She allows the viewer a glimpse of an intimate moment or object, which might at first appear to be rather ordinary. Her work draws on the conventions of documentary and film to build a series of narratives. Often by redefining location and scale or through a layering of details she creates a sense of intrigue, never quite exposing the full extent of the situation or story which she is telling. Kathleen has received several awards from Arts Council England South West, the British Council and Bristol O'Porto Association and has exhibited nationally and internationally, including: Auckland Triennial (NZ); Out of Site, Arnolfini, Bristol; Time & Again, Crawford Gallery, Cork; RMIT Gallery, Melbourne, Australia; Art & Industry Biennial, Christchurch (NZ) and The Silk Purse Procedure, Arnolfini & Spike Island, Bristol. Her work can be viewed in Open Frequency, an online exhibition presenting a broad based perspective on the current UK art scene. See www.axisweb.org/openfrequency (under "current artists"). Kathleen says: "I was drawn to the Residency by the rich and diverse historical context of the Cathedral, and how it functions in today's society and the city of Gloucester. As the Cathedral is laden with numerous opportunities to develop ideas further, my challenge for the residency will be to focus and develop just one avenue of enquiry." Councillor Paul James says: 'The City Council is proud to support a residency which brings first-rate artists to Gloucester and enables our communities to engage creatively with them. Everyone is enriched by the contact; ideas are exchanged and the city's profile in the wider world is enhanced." During Kathleen's time at the Cathedral exhibitions of her work were held in October 2006 and May 2007. |
