Dulverton House

Dulverton HouseDulverton House, whose south wing is shown here, was the Infirmerer's house where it was possible for wealthy persons to live out their last days. The 14th century hall and undercroft are still there, though as with many other houses in the Close, extra floors were inserted after the Dissolution to make rooms for the families of Canons.

The infirmary itself, however, was not treated in the same way: by 1630 it was so derelict that demolition was ordered. But it survived, probably because it was, at the west end, an integral part of the cluster of buildings known as 'Babylon' and indeed for a time housed a fencing school.

However, in 1860 Babylon was destroyed taking with it the Infirmary except for the arcade and west wall.
