In 1860 the east and north walks of Little Cloister lost their roofs, but the west was more fortunate as it formed part of what is now called Little Cloister House. In monastic times here was the Cellarer's Checker where supplies would be stored in the 13th century undercroft. This range of buildings leading westwards towards Millers Green represents a part of the cathedral precincts rich in history but unobtrusive in its display. Some years ago the first floor of Little Cloister House revealed a 15th century painted ceiling and a life size depiction of the Trinity on its north wall. Here probably was the Misericord, or hall where the monks were permitted to eat meat other than that allowed in their Refectory. At one time the thoroughfare to Millers Green was through the blocked doorway below. |
