At the southern most end of the west range, facing north towards the front of Community House, stands one of the most impressive houses in the close. This is No. 9 which was built in 1690. Its fine brick corner pilasters are a splendid frame for the rich Classical porch, itself repeating the shape of the triangular pediment at roof level. Clever use has been made of different coloured bricks to suggest surrounds to the windows. In 1777 its occupier was Dr Wall - son of the founder of the Worcester China factory - and in April of that year Fanny Burney the novelist and diarist described her stay there: she visited No. 12, and witnessed a parade of the Militia on College Green, as well as enjoying the company of that "droll character."
