The next house eastwards provides an excellent illustration of the way in which a façade can mislead: for here apparently is a Victorian pastiche, an unconvincing demonstration of 19th century 'medieval'. Yet a more careful consideration of the roof line and particularly the gables will give grounds for assigning a much earlier date. In fact, here stood the Great Granary in medieval times. Inside, a fine Jacobean fireplace of 1620 bears witness to its conversion. Change of a different sort can be seen with the neighbouring house, No 6, where the stone faced façade looking directly at the cathedral results from an 18th century alteration, when the original front facing east was largely destroyed. Its remains can be seen in College Street. |
