St Michaels Gate

St Michaels Gate

In monastic times, this part of the close was the cemetery for the lay people, which explains why St. Michael's Gate has the alternative name of the Cemetery Gate.

Here pilgrims would pass on their way to the tomb of Edward II. And here too, in make-believe, came the Tailor of Gloucester immortalized through Beatrix Potter's book, for the shop front to the left may be identified in her drawings.
