The English Civil War was a period when families and friends found themselves fighting and killing one another over principles. No other internal conflict in British history has been so all embracing.
In the seventeenth century England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland were all affected by the power struggle known as the English Civil War. Between 1642 and 1660 Parliament and the Crown fell out, with bloody and long-lasting consequences which still impact on modern Britain. The largely uniform political and religious beliefs of the citizens caused Gloucester to play a pivotal role in this conflict, changing the course of history, and leading to the fall of a king- a fact acknowledged by all the commentators around during the period. |
