More weapons and soldiers came to the city in late 1642, as the House of Commons authorised the further support of the Council. In November Stamford's Regiment came to garrison the city. In November 1642 the blue-coated regiment of the Earl of Stamford, a prominent parliamentarian, arrived at Gloucester after abandoning Hereford which had been hostile to them. The second-in-command was Edward Massie, a young engineer with experience of war on the continent. The arrival of so many men strained the accommodation and supplies in the city- the citizens are thought to have paid out more than £4000 for the 1500 men over a 20-week period, although they were led to expect the soldiers to each pay 3 shillings each a week for their board and lodging. |
