As in every other British city, the mass cinema culture of the 40s and 50s withered with the coming of television and the grand picture palaces have been recycled into bingo halls, pubs and churches.

Now the choice is between cosy art and Bollywood cinema in the centre and blockbusters with a big car park on the edge.
