The Royal Alhambra Music Hall, later Royal Albert Hall, then Kings Hall Picture House, then the King's Picture House was opened in the Booth Hall (a building dating back to 1559) in Westgate Street in 1860. For a while it was a circus, then a theatre. In 1907 it became Gloucester's first cinema. Closing in 1914, it reopened in 1918 as the King's Picture House and the following year underwent major refurbishment. The narrow passages of the entrance were replaced by a spacious lounge, a state-of-the-art operating box was installed, the old stage cut back, a new screen and 800 tip-up seats installed.
It continued in use until 1938, was used as an ARP store during World War Two and was demolished in 1957 when Shire Hall was extended.
