Like any city Gloucester has its fair share of art in the open, from decoration on old houses to 70s concrete murals on shops to statues of famous people to abstract sculptures. Pedestrianisation has created even more places to put artworks and opportunities to commission specially-designed benches, railings and cycle parks. Some have stirred up huge controversy, some have melted into the streetscape, others have been forcibly removed.
The imminent development of the Docks area is likely to detonate another explosion of arts activity.
