The storytelling bench was designed by Pascal Mychalysin, Master Mason at Gloucester Cathedral. It was constructed from blocks of stone carved during an international competition held in the cathedral close in 1999. Visiting stonemasons from all over Europe, as well as the cathedral's own team, spent a weekend working furiously in public to begin the bench, which was completed over the following year and erected in the churchyard of St Mary de Crypt. Gloucester's Storyteller in Residence, Ben Haggarty, held storytelling sessions at the bench by day and by night during the next two summers.
