The Cross

The cruciform shape of this carved stone bench by Peter Yarwood celebrates the fact that the mediaeval high cross once stood nearby. The bronze relief panels, designed in workshops with the Crypt School, echo the winding of the River Severn in their form and incorporate images from the waterways, railway, aircraft and matchmaking industries. The carving on the bench ends is inspired by the forms of wings and water

Bronze Tiles at the Cross

Chris Campbell's bronze tiles at the corners of the crossroads use images associated with local trades, artefacts and buildings. The artist worked with local schoolchildren in the Folk Museum, where many of the items depicted can be seen.

The mediaeval monument which once stood at the crossroads was surmounted by an ornate cross which forms the dominant image of the large central tile.
