As well as reputedly having the cheapest Guinness in town the club is a magnet for Irish dancers. Couples in sets tread polkas, reels and all the old dances to the sound of the pipes, fiddle and bodhran, their feet beating out a rhythm on the wooden floor to compete with the clatter of skittles in the alley upstairs. Its step team is world-class, demanding absolute dedication from the young people who travel from all over the region every week to train with phenomenal teachers. In its 60s and 70s heyday the club's membership was huge, but with the 90s upturn in the Irish economy many have returned to work there. The Gaelic football team is no more, and club relies on income from its function room for survival. |
