In the aftermath of the Second World War refugees from the Ukraine were sent to a resettlement camp at Elmbridge on the edge of the city. By 1953 enough people had settled in Gloucester to form a branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.
The Ukrainian Club Dnipro was opened in 1963, each family pledging money towards the building, and since then it has been a focus for Gloucester Ukrainians, though it welcomes everybody to its bar, skittle alley and function room. The Mndriwka dance troupe and the ladies' choir are based there, it runs a day centre for elderly members of the community and everyone gathers there for Ukrainian festivals and celebrations. |
