Football is a major obsession in the city and is no longer just for the boys; Girl's and women's sides like the Gloucester City Girls FC, the Gloucester Greyhounds and the Quedgeley Wanderers compete in strong county leagues and the number of women's teams is increasing all the time.

The main club is Gloucester City FC, based at Meadow Park, but the city has a vibrant footballing community with teams both young and old playing at purpose-built venues such as Plock Court, or on local recreation grounds.
