In the 18th Century canals and rivers were like the motorways of today. Gloucester was a good spot to link the busy River Severn with the Midlands towns which were just getting bigger and bigger.

It started with coal, stone and salt, but different cargoes have been important at different times in the Docks' history. Grain and Scandinavian timber transformed the Victorian Docks, and eventually it all ended with oil. All sorts of things from all over the world have been sent to and from the Docks needing all kinds of special and unusual ships and boats. However moving cargoes was only part of the story. Lots of different industries from making flour to building engines have helped make Gloucester Docks such an important place. |
