The Lower Slaughter Shrine

On the database are nine Romano-British sculptures discovered near Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire. They probably belonged to a pagan temple or shrine close to the Fosse Way. This was one of the most important roads in Britain.

A Countryside Place of Worship

Local people and travellers gave them as offerings to their Gods. The stone is very worn and must have been on view for a long time.

Eight of the Sculptures were found in a well, dug in the 4th century. They were jumbled together, and some had their heads missing. They may have been thrown into the well by people who found them offensive. It is possible that they were vandalised by Christians wanting to destroy pagan icons.
