Gloucester people have been earning a living on the River for thousands of years. Some worked in the ships that once sailed it, but many more only used it occasionally for a fishing bonanza! Gloucester's Working Waters The Severn was once one of the busiest and most notorious rivers in Europe. To deal with its dangers a unique type of ship was invented, and at Gloucester men had to be employed to actually pull ships along. There are many different kinds of fish at Gloucester, and just as many tricks used to catch them, but money could be made only at certain times of the year. The smaller rivers of Gloucester were also used by industry, and the Twyver was well known for water mills. |
