Watery Worlds

The wildlife in Gloucester is very special. The Severn gives a home and food to many kinds of animals and plants. Because the water is fast flowing and tidal, the habitat is constantly changing.

A Unique Mix of Rare Creatures and Flowers

We are lucky to have natural flood-meadows right next to the city centre. Here you can see over 100 species of birds and countless rare water plants, insects and butterflies. The Docks give a chance to see unusual foreign plants accidentally transported there by ships and railways.

All sorts of creatures enjoy the protection of the riverbanks, from water voles to `Musk Beetles' - a Gloucester speciality!

The water itself is teeming with life. Some of the many types of fish have swum thousands of miles to reach Gloucester.
