Feed your mind at lunchtime. Once a month there is a free lecture in the City Museum. Lasting less then an hour (from 1.10 until 1.50pm) they are ideal for a break from work, shopping or just a visit to town. Every month it's a different topic by an expert in that field. Everything has been discussed from interesting aspects of Gloucester's history and collections to the origins of chess and quilting. Come and learn the origin of the celebrated landmark above Cheltenham known as the Devils Chimney. This fully illustrated talk by Dr Ray Wilson of the Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology will reveal this as part of the story of the the quarries on Leckhampton Hill and the tramroads that served them. The talk will include the riots on the hill during 1902-1906 and recent developments at Gloucester Docks to commemorate the Gloucester & Cheltenham Tramroad which was arguably Gloucestershire's first 'official railway'. It was the tramroad that brought the stone from Leckhampton Quarries for the construction of the original Shire Hall of 1815-16. Keep coming at this page for the following months Culture Clubs.
