It is housed mainly on three floors of some of the oldest surviving timber-framed buildings in Gloucester : a Tudor merchant's house and a 17th century town house. It is said that the Protestant Bishop Hooper lodged here the night before he was burned at the stake in 1555. Brass pins were also made here by hand during the 18th and 19th centuries and are still found beneath the floor boards. Recent extensions at the rear include a Dairy, an ironmonger's shop and wheelwright and carpenter workshops. There is also a garden with a relaxing water feature for those hot summer days.
There is a regular programme of exhibitions and a wide range of schools workshops, special events, holiday activities and various demonstrations throughout the year. It is a registered museum, a quality assured visitor attraction and has won an MGM award for audience development. The Museum has entered the 21st century with its NOF-funded project for the digitisation of collections and 'The Portal' interactive gallery. Gloucester Folk Museum (01452) 396868 |
