Early in the war the company designed and built the world's first jet aircraft, the E28/39 (1940-42). This revolution in aircraft design first left the ground at Hucclecote in 1941. Local people were amazed to see a plane without a propeller and to hear for the first time the now familiar sound of the jet engine. From the E28/39 the company developed the world's first operational jet fighter, the twin engined Gloster METEOR (1942-54), which eventually equipped the Air Forces of fourteen countries.
