The Gloucestershire Aircraft Company was formed in 1917 to build fighter planes for the First World War. An offshoot of a Hendon Company, it rented the Cheltenham works of H.H. Martyn & Co., architectural engineers, where skilled woodworkers were available to build the wooden airframes.
