Bells for America

John Rudhall was declared bankrupt in 1815 and in 1830, Mears & Stainbank of London bought the business. Mears retained John as the manager until his death in 1835 and the foundry was maintained until 1848 when the equipment was transferred to London.

During the 150 years of the foundry's production over 5,000 bells were cast for churches and other buildings in the counties around Gloucester. Some bells went as far as London, Scotland and Ireland. The oldest peal of bells in U.S.A., at Christ Church Boston, was cast by Rudhall's of Gloucester in 1774. Bells were also sent to other American and Jamaican churches.
