The last days of the foundry are illustrated in a charming way. A miniature bell inscribed 'Edward Churchill 1833 and John Simpson 1848', which is at the Museum, was the last to be cast at the Gloucester foundry. The frame was made by Charles Jacques, for many years carpenter and bell hanger to the foundry. Edward Churchill had been foreman at the foundry for over 40 years.
The Rudhall family holds an important place in the history of bell founding for their efficient production and delivery system and for the number and quality of bells produced, making Gloucester a nationally known centre of industry. Click here for more resources relating to Bell Founding. |
