Gloucester's oldest established department store Debenham's was originally called the Bon Marche and was extensively redeveloped in the 1930s. Retailing is a major source of employment in the City.

Like similar Cities across the country many people in Gloucester are now employed in the large supermarkets and retail outlets on the City outskirts.
