Samuel Moreland

Samuel John Moreland was born in Stroud in 1828. He started working in Gloucester c.1850 and soon gained an in-depth knowledge of the timber trade. The 1851 census listed him as a lath-render. In 1853 he was 'sawing, planing, moulding and lath- rendering'. By 1856 he had added a joinery works his business and was producing 'every description of building timber' - he even made huts for the troops of the Crimean War. But it was the foundation of his match factory in 1867 that ensured him a lasting reputation.

When Samuel John Moreland decided to become a matchmaker, he gathered a small band of helpers and gradually expanded the business. They began by producing lucifer and vesta matches. But he was quick to utilise new forms of phosphorous and new formulas, which were to bring in the era of the safety match.
