Mechanisation of Pin Making |
Any hopes of recovery were dashed by technological changes in the industry itself. Several people had attempted the mechanisation of pin heading, but finally in 1824 an American called Lemuel Wright patented his machine for making solid head pins. His invention was taken up by Daniel Foot Taylor who used the machines at Lightpill near Stroud.

Pinmaking left Gloucester in the mid-19th century and moved to areas with steam or waterpower to work the new machines. |
