For over one hundred years Gloucester was a railway centre. Black smoke from steam engines filled the air. Traffic stopped at Barton Gates and California Crossing for expresses to London and goods trains to the Docks. The Carriage and Wagon Works Company built coal trucks, carriages and Maharajahs coaches. At night people's sleep was broken by the noise of shunting in huge marshalling yards.
