Soldier, Politician, Prisoner and Gloucester Hero Before the War Edward Massie was one of King Charles I's soldiers, but changed sides at the start of the Civil War. In 1645 he became an MP, but got himself arrested and put into prison. He was wounded in the Battle of Worcester, then captured. Put into the Tower of London, he made a daring escape! It was the third time he had been on the run. When Charles II was eventually made King, Colonel Massie became an MP again and was made Governor of Jamaica then of Ireland as a reward. |
