Colonel Edward Massie 1619-1674

Colonel Massie was famous for defending Gloucester against the King's army in 1643. But amazingly he fought on both sides in the Civil War, and escaped from prison twice!

Portrait of Colonel Edward Massie

Soldier, Politician, Prisoner and Gloucester Hero

Before the War Edward Massie was one of King Charles I's soldiers, but changed sides at the start of the Civil War.

In 1645 he became an MP, but got himself arrested and put into prison. He was wounded in the Battle of Worcester, then captured. Put into the Tower of London, he made a daring escape! It was the third time he had been on the run.

When Charles II was eventually made King, Colonel Massie became an MP again and was made Governor of Jamaica then of Ireland as a reward.
