Robert Raikes 1736-1811

Robert Raikes is still remembered today for opening a Sunday School in St. Catherine's Street, Gloucester. His idea was copied and led to hundreds and then thousands of similar schools springing up all over the world.

Robert Raikes Jnr.

Journalist rakes in kids who run riot

In 18th Century Gloucester children had to work in the factories and only had Sundays off. They had no entertainment so spent the day making mischief.

Robert ran the Gloucester Journal and had campaigned about the terrible conditions in the City's prisons. To stop children from committing crimes and ending up in prison, he opened the Sunday School. They were taught to read and write, and sometimes even got a slice of plum cake, but you had to have a clean face and combed hair to be allowed in!
