George Whitefield 1714-1770

George Whitefield was famous for being an evangelist. He is perhaps best known today for helping to found the Universities of Princeton and Pennsylvania, as well as over 50 other colleges in the U.S.A.

Bust of George Whitefield

The Preacher whose "voice startled England like a trumpet blast"

George grew up in the Bell Inn, Southgate Street, "addicted to lying, filthy talking, and foolish jesting". He did well at the Crypt and King's Schools and went to Oxford University. There he suddenly decided to teach people about the Bible.

Eventually he gave about 18,000 sermons, that's 10 per week. He mainly preached outside, once in London to an audience of 20,000!

Wanting to reach as many people as possible he travelled all over the U.K., and went to America seven times. He died in Newbury Port, Massachusetts.
