Our way of life is very different to that of 150 years ago. But once again Gloucester people helped create the modern culture that we take for granted.
W.E. Henley encouraged some of the world's best-loved authors. It's said that he even inspired one of their most celebrated villains! The First World War shaped some great poets, not least Ivor Gurney, who also happened to be a great composer too. John Bellows may not be well known, but he gave Gloucester back its historic past, and gave the World a new kind of dictionary. |
