John Bellows 1831-1902

John Bellows is remembered as the father of Gloucester Archaeology, combining a love of Gloucester with a passion for sharing its history.

Oil Painting of John Bellows

Printer Bellows, doesn't like to shout about it!

A tee-total, non-smoking Quaker from Cornwall changed the way we think about our City.

John Bellows was the first person to recognise that our City walls were Roman in Origin, and he also gave us one of our greatest archaeological treasures - the fabulous Iron Age Birdlip Mirror.

He was a true Victorian: hard -working, inquisitive and inventive. A printer by trade, he introduced the first steam operated press seen in Gloucester. He also invented a cylindrical calculator and produced the world's first French/English pocket dictionary from scratch - having to learn French first!
